Typhoon Nida ‘grounds’ passengers at klia2
PETALING JAYA: Many passengers whose flights were affected by Typhoon Nida had to sleep on klia2’s floors on Monday night, The Star Online reported.
The passengers, who were bound for Hong Kong and a number of southern Chinese cities had their flights either delayed or cancelled.
According to the report, 28 AirAsia flights between Malaysia and Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Hangzhou and Wuhan were cancelled on Monday and yesterday.
Malaysia Airlines, meanwhile, cancelled flights MH78 from KLIA on Monday and MH79 from Hong Kong, yesterday.
Staff manning klia2’s customer service counter, who spoke to the news portal on condition of anonymity, said they received a lot of questions as to where stranded passengers could spend the night.
An AirAsia staff at the check-in counter said most of their passengers were notified of their flight situation, so they were prepared to spend a night in the airport or a nearby hotel.
However, he said many were unable to get a hotel room and opted to use the hotel’s shower facilities.
By yesterday morning, the situation at the airport had returned to normal, with most flights taking off on schedule, minus some flights to Hong Kong and southern Chinese cities, The Star Online reported.
In Hong Kong, Typhoon Nida, which has caused the cancellation of over 300 flights, is said to be the strongest typhoon to hit the region since 1983.
