New immigration chief hits the ground running on second day at work
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 ― Datuk Mustafar Ali has shown himself to be an action man who prefers to lead his men at the frontline instead of behind his desk in his new role as director-general of the Immigration Department.
Within 48 hours of clocking in, the former deputy chief of prevention at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) led a team of 50 immigration officers on a spot-check of illegal immigrants at three pubs in Puchong, Selangor last night, The New Straits Times Online reported.
“This operation was to ensure that these illegal immigrants, or those without valid documents, who enter our country and partake in immoral activities are dealt with immediately,” Mustafar was quoted as saying.
“Such acts must be nipped in the bud as soon as possible as it may affect the cultures and norms of the country,” he added.
According to the news portal, the operation started at 11.30pm and screened some 110 people, of which 84 have been detained for various nationalities offences.
Mustafar also reportedly said that his department will next focus on working with local authorities and enforcement agencies to deal with issues related to licensing.
“The Immigration Department will focus on documentation, and whether or not they [those being checked] have it.
“On other aspects, for example, if there are drug-related activities, the case would be presented to the relevant authority,” he was quoted as saying.
