Stitching together a world record

Visitors admire handbags in the world’s largest holdall bag displayed at the Ipoh Parade mall on February 19.IPOH, Aug 3 — It was a proud day for 108 men and women here when they officially received the unique accolade of being a certified Guinness World Record holder.

The group was part of 606 participants who broke the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people sewing simultaneously, at Perbadanan Putrajaya on April 9.

Organised by the Association of Creative Sewing Art of Malaysia and the Epal Handicraft Training Centre, the event saw participants of all ages, races and backgrounds joining forces to smash the previous record of 330 participants from Hong Kong.

The association also holds the world record for the largest holdall bag — a behemoth which stands at 5.44m in height.

Physically-challenged participant Salmah Abdullah, 62, was ecstatic to be part of such a historic event.

“I hope this will be an inspiration to people like me everywhere. Just because you have physical challenges doesn’t mean you can never achieve anything,” said the mother of three, beaming from ear to ear.

“This certificate is like gold to me. It shows that where there is a will, there is a way.”

Retired teacher Ong Chon Yen, 63, said she was happy to have taken part in an attempt to break a world record.

“But this represents more than a record. I have been interested in sewing since I was young but only joined the Epal Handicraft Training Centre after I retired,” she said.

“I am satisfied that I got to learn so much and be part of this grand achievement.” Perak women development, family, community welfare, housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Rusnah Kassim presented the certificates to the participants.

Rusnah was proud of the association for getting its name in the illustrious record book.

“It is not an easy feat to have your name in the Guinness Book of World Records. Achievements like this would not have been possible without the cooperation of all participants and a sense of unity,” she told the recipients.
