Snap polls in Terengganu? Source says MB confident BN will do better

Terengganu Mentri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman (pic) has reportedly requested the Umno supreme council to consider snap state election to end the leadership crisis between him and predecessor Datuk Seri Ahmad Said. ― Bernama picKUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 ― Terengganu Mentri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman has reportedly proposed early state elections as a solution to the leadership crisis between him and predecessor Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, according to a report in The Star today.

Citing an unnamed Terengganu Umno official, the newspaper reported that the mentri besar has requested the party’s supreme council to consider snap state election to resolve for once and for all the nagging problems posed by Ahmad Said who is still Kijal assemblyman.

“The MB is resigned to the situation. If there is to be an election, he is ready and confident that Barisan will do better,” the Terengganu Umno official was quoted as saying.

The Star also reported that relations between the duo have frayed further in the last few days and that Ahmad Said had gone on an angry rant against Ahmad Razif during an Umno function in Kemaman and dared the national leadership to sack him.

According to the newspaper, there may be new developments at the state legislative assembly which will sit next Monday that could result in a hung government for Terengganu, as Ahmad Said and Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib rebel.

Umno holds 17, PAS 14 and PKR one in the 32-seat Terengganu state legislative assembly.

In the last state assembly sitting in March, Ahmad Said, who was replaced in 2014, had tabled a no-confidence motion against Ahmad Razif in the House, though it failed.

Yesterday, Ahmad Razif confirmed that the Terengganu Umno had sent a report on Ahmad Said’s alleged wrongdoing to the supreme council as well as the Umno disciplinary board for action.

“The party has taken action against Umno deputy president and vice-president. I leave it to the party leadership to take disciplinary action based on our report. There should be no double standards,” he was quoted by The Star as telling reporters during a Hari Raya celebration in Terengganu.

Ahmad Razif, has been dogged by criticism after his “Datuk Seri” title was withdrawn by the state palace earlier this year for unknown reasons.
