Roti 1Malaysia will be your new favourite snack

My childhood schoolmate Carlos Ho had just treated us to a hearty meal when another friend, Indah Low mentioned Roti 1Malaysia. Like typical Malaysians, we immediately headed off to look for the stall that sold it which happened to be in the vicinity.

1Malaysia Mamak in Jinjang South caters to night owls who come for dinner or supper. It sets up just outside a brightly-lit house converted into a makan place. Although there is no signboard, people obviously know about it as it draws a nightly crowd.

The Roti 1Malaysia is a thin jumbo sized roti tissue, a popular Indian flat bread.

I parked myself in front of the hawker with my smartphone at the ready, but he was already setting one Roti 1Malaysia to cook on a huge flatpan and making another.

As he made it, I counted him flipping it 14 times.

Imagine a flatbread the size of your laptop, or double the size of a normal roti canai. On it, he sprinkled three ingredients that are said to represent the three ethnic races in Malaysia. First, ground roasted peanuts, then he layered it with Milo and finally, Nestum cereal. He cut the roti into three long strips, stacked them up and cut across six times. For extra oomph, he added another sprinkle of Milo before the server took it to the customer.

When our order finally arrived, we tucked in while it was hot and crispy. It got the thumbs up from all of us and we immediately ordered another. That quickly disappeared – that was how good it was!

A two-year-old girl at our table was sharing a roti Planta with her mother, but she dozed off and mum who polished off the bread.

Then Turbo’s roti cheese came. This version had a piece of cut up cheese on top of the bread, not buried within. The roti looked smaller than normal. It came with two types of gravy: a dhall (yellow split peas) and rasam (soup made with tamarind). I did not quite enjoy the gravies though Turbo raved about the rasam.

The roti bom (sweetened creamer and sugar) was quite taste and we tucked in heartily.

Ho recommended the stall’s bestselling mutton curry. The bite-sized pieces of meat was succulent and tender and, the curry was flavourful. Alas, we had no bread left to mop it up.

We plan to visit this night stall again and two plates of Roti 1Malaysia are definitely a must-have.
