13 high-paying summer jobs for college students

These summer jobs pay well and don’t require a college degree.

The summer vacation, while sometimes reserved for summer lovin’ and fun in the sun, is also a prime time to earn some extra cash and learn valuable lessons about hard work and responsibility.

To find some of the best opportunities out there for college students, we asked FlexJobs, an online service specializing in telecommuting and remote work, to scour its site for some of the highest-paying summer and seasonal job listings.

“Pinpointing these types of high-paying, flexible summer jobs does require extra effort for job seekers, which is one of the reasons FlexJobs exists — to help cut down on the time and effort it takes to uncover these flexible positions,” says Brie Reynolds, senior career specialist at FlexJobs. “But the great news is that, as these jobs show, it’s possible to have a seasonal summer job that pays well and doesn’t require a college degree.”

The following jobs offer flexible work options with either part-time schedules and flexible hours, employee or freelance work, or remote or telecommuting options. None of them require a college degree, though many do require some previous experience, and each potentially pays double the federal minimum wage:

Assistant summer camp coordinator

PayScale pay range: $9.30 — $18.45

Sample job description: Provide assistance to camp directory and coordinator with planning and organizing summer youth classes. Must adhere to guidelines. CPR certification and high school diploma or GED required. Some college preferred. Part-time position.

Web content specialist/writer

PayScale pay range: $12.60 — $28.48

Sample job description: Perform research and create content relating to public relations for a website. Take photographs as needed. Writing/photography skills and work samples required. Part-time, temporary.

Temporary office manager

PayScale pay range: $11.02 — $20.83

Sample job description: Manage scheduling, oversee inventory, and ensure safety compliance. Computer proficiency and strong customer service skills required. Full-time, temporary position. 

Tour guide

PayScale pay range: $8.84 — $18.49

Sample job description: Provide tours of travel destination. Flexible schedule, leadership abilities, strong customer service skills, personality and professionalism, ability to memorize tour script required. Reservations management system experience preferred. Part-time, seasonal position.

Environmental field technician

PayScale pay range: $9.81 — $20.42

Sample job description: Work out in the field taking samples, performing lab tasks, processing samples, and preparing samples for shipment. High school diploma and ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Full-time, seasonal position.

Events assistant

PayScale pay range: $9.83 — $19.80

Sample job description: Plan and host events, as well as general administrative duties. Experience required. Full-time, temporary position.

Summer camp educator

PayScale pay range: $9.16 — $18.68

Sample job description: Develop curriculum and create activities for children. High school diploma or GED and one year of experience required. Full-time, temporary position.

Records clerk

PayScale pay range: $10.66 — $17.47

Sample job description: Provide assistance to company with migrating electronic management record system. Review electronic and paper documents. Work with vendors on coordination of scanning and physical storage. Strong communication skills required. Temporary position.

Seasonal customer service representative

PayScale pay range: $9.01 — $16.75

Sample job description: Respond to incoming calls and work to provide customer service and resolve problems. High school diploma or GED and customer contact/computer experience required. Full-time, seasonal position.

Summer camp chef

PayScale pay range: $8.56 — $15.06

Sample job description: Responsible for developing menus and cooking meals for campers. High school diploma and at least one year of related experience required. Full-time, temporary, seasonal position.

Golf player assistant

PayScale pay range: $8.96 — $14.73

Sample job description: Work in a team environment and ensure the speed of play for rounds of golf and operations of the driver range. High school diploma or GED and golf operation knowledge required. Summer seasonal position.

Stand-up paddling instructor

PayScale pay range: $10.10 — $33.94

Sample job description: Promote and run classes and activities, make sales, and monitor activity and compliance. First-aid certification required. Flexible hour, temporary position.

 

Seasonal botanical field technicians

PayScale pay range: $9.81 — $20.42

Sample job description: Conduct vegetation surveys including rare plant clearances. Experience/coursework in botany, knowledge of rangeland ecosystems and soils, extensive travel, and plant taxonomic skills required. Part-time, seasonal temporary role.
