‘I’M NOT THE ONE WHO PUT ANWAR IN JAIL’: DR M SIGNS ‘FREE ANWAR’ PETITION, SIGNAL HE’S WILLING TO BACK ANWAR AS PM IF THAT’S WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT
SHAH ALAM: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad signed a petition calling for the release of jailed PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the party’s annual congress here on Sunday.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman signed the petition as he headed out of the convention hall after following the speeches by PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
When asked how he felt about attending the congress – considering why the party was founded – he simply replied it was not him who put Anwar in jail.
“That’s an old story,” he told reporters here.
PPBM deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir also signed the petition.
Asked if he supported Anwar as prime minister, Mukhriz said there was still a need for discussions among Pakatan Harapan members on the right candidate.
“But I agree wholeheartedly that the candidate should be announced before the general election,” he added.
Anwar was the deputy prime minister when he was sacked by Dr Mahathir in 1998.
He was later charged with sodomy and jailed.
Anwar is currently in prison serving a five-year jail term after being convicted for a second sodomy charge.
