- Stan Wawrinka stuns Andy Murray with a 3-2 French Open semi-final thriller
World number one Andy Murray has crashed out of the French Open in a riveting semi-final encounter with Stan Wawrinka at Roland-Garros in Paris on Friday.
In a back-and-forth battle, Murray won the first and third sets and was one tie-break away from winning the fourth set.
However, Wawrinka enjoyed a late – and decisive – surge to win sets four and five to claim a 3-2 victory over Britain’s number one tennis player.
Wawrinka will now watch courtside as clay legend Rafael Nadal and Italian hopeful Dominic Thiem contest the other semi-final.
A three-time major champion, 32-year-old Wawrinka gets the chance to add a second French Open title to his CV when he returns to the court on Sunday. If successful, the Swiss player stands to bank a £1.8 million paycheque.
