Umno leader: 'Nothing to Hide' turns into 'Mahathir hiding'

The Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum was meant to be a no holds-barred debate as well as question and answer session involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

As expected, Najib did not turn up while Mahathir's session came to an abrupt end when the forum took a violent twist with flares being ignited and slippers as well as chairs being thrown.

According to Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi, the forum turned out to be a colossal embarrassment for the 92-year-old former premier.

“He was left embarrassed because... Nothing to Hide turned into Mahathir looking for 'hiding' (sic) from the flying chairs and slippers.

“In the end, Mahathir went home embarrassed. Twenty-two years of being prime minister, and slippers were lobbed at him,” he added in a media statement this evening.

Puad, who is also the special affairs department (Jasa) director-general, claimed that youths at the forum had assailed Mahathir with questions he could not answer.

His answers to these issues, the Umno leader pointed out, were nothing more than “it is an old story”, which contradicted the objective of the forum to bare all.

In the end, Puad said the youths present became embroiled in a brawl.

“Chairs flew, flares were ignited, and punches were traded. This is the legacy of a leader who wants to continue lying to the people, who is egotistical, makes U-turns, forgets easily and is hard headed.

“Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will perish because of Mahathir. Pakatan Harapan will continue to be tainted because of Mahathir,” he added.

Puad also questioned the organiser's move to put up the prime minister's name and photograph in the hall when they knew that Najib would not attend as there was nothing in black and white to confirm he would be present at the forum.

“Doesn't this amount to lying to the people? Where is Bersatu's sincerity?

“What is more embarrassing is that Mahathir as chairperson of Bersatu failed to advise the youth wing (which organised the forum) to be honest,” he said.

Puad claimed that the motive of the forum was similar to what transpired at the previous one - which is to embarrass Najib.

Though he was not invited for the Nothing to Hide 1.0, the Umno leader said Mahathir gatecrashed the event organised by NGOs and spoke on stage.

“His (Mahathir's) supporters declared that Mahathir won because Najib did not show up. The fact is the event was supposed to be a town hall meet and not a debate. Najib was supposed to have a dialogue with invited guests.

“However, Najib was magnanimous. He heeded the police's advice to cancel the event because of the plan by Mahathir's group to sabotage it. Which prime minister would want to see youths fighting in front of him?” he asked.

Police have arrested three youths in relation to yesterday's fracas in Shah Alam.

Bersatu Youth has denied that the three are its members, claiming that some people were paid to masquerade as being members of the wing.

Government leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, have condemned the violence. Whereas, opposition leaders have blamed Najib and Umno. - Mkini
