Amnesty Int’l Malaysia joins chorus against Rafizi’s arrest
KUALA LUMPUR: Amnesty International (AI) Malaysia has joined the chorus of voices condemning the arrest of Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli of PKR.
AI Malaysia executive director Shamini Darshni was quoted saying in the Malay Mail Online that Rafizi was denied his basic rights, when he was not given access to legal representation in the first few hours of being held.
“Anyone who is arrested needs to have legal representation.”
Shamini also criticised the manner in which Rafizi was arrested when he exited Parliament on Tuesday.
“The way the whole incident happened, you know he was arrested at the entrance of the Parliament gate, and then the police went over to his office, the question is why?” she said today at the national launch of Amnesty International’s Death Sentences and Executions 2015 Report.
Rafizi was nabbed following police reports lodged against him over the revelation of documents classified under the Official Secrets Act, that allegedly linked 1Malaysia Development Berhad to the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
He will be remanded until Friday.
