San Diego proclaims April 5 ‘Nisha Ayub Day’
PETALING JAYA: Transgender rights activist, Nisha Ayub described the decision by the city of San Diego in the US to declare April 5 “Nisha Ayub Day” in recognition of her efforts, “a dream.”
San Diego Mayor Kevin L Faulconer officially made the proclamation, saying it was in recognition of Nisha’s efforts to fight for equality and the protection of transgender rights in Malaysia and outside the country.
In a Facebook post, Nisha pointed out that April 5 was also her birthday.
Nisha revealed she was also presented the Jose Julio Sarria Civil Rights Award from City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez and an International Woman of Courage award from the San Diego Diploma Council.
“They even gave me a surprise birthday cake ceremony, I’m so blessed and honoured.
“Thank you to the United States Government for creating this platform for me to advocate transgender rights,” she said while also thanking everyone who had supported her.
Recently, Nisha made headlines when she became the first trans woman to be named recipient of the US Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award. In 2015, she received the Human Rights Watch’s Alison Des Forges Award.
Nisha heads Seed Foundation, an organisation that reaches out to transgenders, sex workers and HIV patients.
She became an activist after being sexually abused by the warden and other inmates of a male prison ten years ago while serving a three-month sentence for dressing as a woman.
News about “Nisha Ayub Day” provides some respite for the transgender community and their supporters following recent news that religious authorities had gatecrashed a dinner hosted by the transgender community.
