Canada grants Malaysian student refugee status
PETALING JAYA: Canada has given refugee status to a Malaysian student who openly admitted he was a homosexual and an atheist.
The matter was decided by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board during a hearing session which lasted 20 minutes yesterday.
“It was overwhelming. I feel really, really loved and appreciated,” the student, Hazim Ismail, was quoted as saying in a news report by website CBC.ca.
A student at Winnipeg University, Hazim had expressed fear over his safety if he was sent back to Malaysia.
His lawyer, Bashir Khan, was quoted as saying that Hazim cannot be deported from Canada or sent back to Malaysia now that he was a protected person.
“This is one of those cases where the evidence is strong.
“My client is very credible and he has tremendous public support,” Bashir said, pointing out that these factors contributed to him winning the refugee claim without many problems.
Proper documentation on his protected person status would be available to Hazim within three to six weeks.
He can then apply for permanent residence status with the said documents.
It was said that Hazim had been disowned by his family since last year. They had also stopped funding his education.
This came after they found out about his sexual preference and declaration of being an atheist.
