PETALING JAYA: It was Hollywood style action all the way at the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) on Tuesday, when police personnel and officers of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) jointly rounded-up “tontos” (thugs) who were protecting lorries operating illegally.

New Straits Times reported that the special operation was carried out in several states, but that it was the one near the Kinrara exit of the highway that saw the most “action.”

In the incident, a police helicopter descended to box-in the suspects while enforcement officers in plainclothes surrounded the men, rounding-up at least ten.

The suspects had earlier tailed the JPJ officers as they left their office in the Klang Valley.

Aware of being tailed, the JPJ officers “lured” the suspects to an area near a petrol station close to the Kinrara exit, where plainclothes policemen were lying in wait to nab them.

A helicopter was also on stand-by to prevent the suspects from escaping. The men, aged between 20 and 40, have been detained under the Prevention of Crime Act.

It is learnt the suspects work for operators of transportation companies, who employ non-licensed drivers and operate commercial vehicles without insurance coverage and valid road tax. The suspects’ main function was to intimidate enforcement officers who wanted to detain such vehicles.
