Baby girl and 107-year-old woman go to the polls

SUNGAI BESAR: A newborn baby girl, Nur Anisa Aisara Mohd Amin, just three weeks old, was among those who were at the polls in the parliamentary by-election here today.

With baby in arms, the girl’s mother, Norzawani Mohd Saad, 29, was given assistance by Election Commission (EC) staff at the polling station at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Yoke Kuan in Sekinchan before casting her vote.

Despite her lack of energy in recovering from childbirth, Norzawani said she could not ignore her responsibility as a registered voter.

“I left the house at 9 am with my sister by my side to cast our votes here and I feel very happy and relieved after doing my part,” she said.

She first voted at the 2013 general election.

Among the earliest voters at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Limau was 107-year-old Asmah Kasan, who was wheeled to the polling centre by her granddaughter Indarwati Turmadi, 40, and two others.

Indarwati said her grandmother, who has impaired vision and a speech disorder, had never failed to vote in an election since Independence.

“Although her identity card says she is 87 years old, she was actually born 20 years earlier,” she said.

Utusan Malaysia journalist Umu Hani Assaidah Abdullah, 30, took time off from covering the Sungai Besar by-election to perform her duty as a registered voter in the constituency.

“After covering the event involving Barisan Nasional candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi earlier, I thought it was a perfect time for me to cast my vote. I’m proud to have done my part as a citizen,” she said.

Several voters who came to the polling centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Utama were confused and disappointed after finding out that their polling centres had been changed.

The problem was quickly solved with help from EC staff.

The by-election is being held following the death of the sitting MP, Noriah Kasnon, in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak, on May 5.

The candidates are Budiman Mohd Zohdi (BN), Dr Abdul Rani Osman (PAS) and Azhar Abdul Shukur (Amanah).
