Wahid says drives Uber for charity, to promote new Perdana
In a public Facebook post today, Datin Orked Ahmad—sister to late film director Yasmin Ahmad—shared a screenshot of her conversation with the former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department via text messaging app WhatsApp.
“It is a ‘3-in-1’ personal initiative with three objectives. 1. Experience what it is like to be a ride sharing driver/Uber partner; 2. Promote the all new Proton Perdana as the national executive car; and 3. Raise some funds for charity,” Wahid said in the text message.
“Some of my friends pledged to match 1 for 1 top-up for charity. So far I’ve got 30 times ‘top-up’. That means a RM30 ride from Ministry of Communications, Putrajaya to KL Sentral is worth RM900 for charity!”
In the conversation, Wahid further said all incomes he receives from driving Uber will proceed to an unnamed charity organisation. He also revealed that he registered as an Uber driver on Thursday.
Proton Holdings Bhd introduced the fourth generation of its flagship Perdana on Tuesday, although an earlier version of the model, which is itself based on the Honda Accord, has been available for official government use since December 2013.
Wahid said he had always wanted to drive for Uber since he was a minister, but held back since Putrajaya had yet to regulate Uber.
In April, the Transport Ministry announced that Uber and GrabCar drivers will be required to obtain licences as the government aims to regulate the ride-sharing services like taxis.
Yesterday, Facebook user Firdaus Fadzil revealed the former chief executive officer of Maybank Group’s new job in a post on his personal profile.
His post was geotagged at the Communications and Multimedia Ministry in Precinct 4, Putrajaya.
Blogger and political commentator Norizan Sharif also reposted Firdaus’ post after he met with Wahid to confirm the news and claimed that he drove Uber to understand people’s thoughts.
State news agency Bernama reported on March that Abdul Wahid will be ending his tenure as minister and senator on June 4.
