Cops: Only ‘handful’ of reports lodged in Sungai Besar, among lowest ever
SABAK BERNAM, June 18 — The police have received a total of 21 reports since nomination day up to today in the Sungai Besar by-election for various petty issues, the state’s police chief said.
Senior Deputy Commissioner Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said the number was one the lowest in the history of by-elections.
“Of the 21 cases, with the latest lodged today morning, only 10 are being probed and four have been classified as solved,” he told a news conference at the district’s police headquarters.
On the types of reports lodged, Abdul Samah said they mostly consist of small cases and were not considered as serious.
“They were like rallies that did not have permit, burning of party flags and of course the provocative billboards,” he said.
Abdul Samah then thanked all the three parties for cooperating with the police in ensuring there were no unruly incidents.
He said there were a total of 4,546 officer mobilised to ensure the election ends smoothly.
Polling for the parliamentary seat ends at 5pm and results are expected to be announced as early as 9pm at the Seri Bernam Hall in Sungai Besar.
As of 1pm, the voter turnout stood at 53 per cent.
Sungai Besar parliamentary constituency has 42,655 registered voters, comprising normal voters (42,365), early voters (286) and absent voters who are currently abroad (four).
The by-election sees a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Budiman Mohd Zohdi, who is also Sungai Panjang assemblyman; PAS’ candidate Dr Abdul Rani Osman, who is also Meru assemblyman; and Amanah’s candidate Azhar Abdul Shukur, who represents the Pakatan Harapan.
