Buggy rides make it easy for the elderly voters
SUNGAI BESAR: Elderly voters coming to cast their ballots at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Utama here praised the Election Commission today for providing a buggy service for their convenience.
Many senior citizens were seen enjoying the service on the 100-metre ride from the school gate to the polling station in the school.
Khadijah Sultan, 75, said that at previous elections, elderly voters had to make do with wheelchairs provided at polling centres.
The buggy service, however, was faster and more practical as it could transport more elderly voters to the polling centre at one time.
“I used to be able to walk, but as I get older and have knee problems, I’m not able to walk long distances. This buggy service really made it easy for me,” she said.
Chia Moy Khang, 69, admitted that he breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing the buggy car at the school gate.
“This is very good. It makes it easy for old and unhealthy man like me to go cast my vote,” said the man whose movements have been limited after a stroke two years ago.
Polling takes place in Sungai Besar as well as Kuala Kangsar, Perak, today, to fill vacancies caused by the deaths of both MPs in a helicopter crash in Sarawak in May.
The candidates in Sungai Besar are Budiman Mohd Zohdi (Barisan Nasional), Dr Abdul Rani Osman (PAS) and Azhar Ab Shukur (Amanah). Results are expected by 9pm.
