EC reports almost 60pc turn out at the Sungai Besar by-election
SUNGAI BESAR, June 18 — Up to 58 per cent of the voters had cast their ballots as of 2pm in the Sungai Besar parliamentary by-election today, according to the Election Commission.
The EC said this comprised 24,572 of the 42,365 voters in the constituency.
A check by Bernama found the number of voters at polling centres in the afternoon was smaller than in the morning though the weather was not too hot.
Vote canvassers who were highly spirited in the morning seemed to be less aggressive in the afternoon.
The Sungai Besar by-election is a three-cornered contest among Budiman Mohd Zohdi of BN, Dr Abdul Rani Osman of PAS and Azhar Abdul Shukur of Amanah.
It is being held following the death of the MP, Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
The 28 polling centres which opened at 8am today will close at 5pm. — Bernama
