In Penang, man charged with supporting IS terror group
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 11 — A 21-year-old man was charged at the magistrate’s court here with two counts of giving support to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
Mohamad Saufi Ibrahim allegedly showed support to IS through messaging app Telegram using the name “Saufiibrahim”.
The unemployed man is believed to have committed the offence at a flat in Tanjung Bungah some time between March 25 last year and June 29 this year.
Charged under Section 130J (1) (a) of the Penal Code, the unemployed man faces a life sentence or an imprisonment term of not exceeding 30 years or with fine and forfeiture of any property used in connection to the offence upon conviction.
Mohamad Saufi faced a second charge of possessing items that contain terrorism elements related to IS such as stickers and two books titled “Tarbiyah Jihadiyah” Volume 1-6 and Volume 7-11.
He allegedly committed the second offence, under Section 130JB (1) (a) of the Penal Code, at the same place at about 3.15pm on July 15.
He is liable to up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine and a forfeiture of property upon conviction.
No plea was recorded and Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid fixed October 4 for mention of the case.
Bail was also not offered and Mohamad Saufi was not represented.
