Ku Nan: Muhyiddin must not name party ‘Bersatu’

Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor urged the Registrar of Societies not to allow Parti Pribumi to use ‘Bersatu’ as part of its name. — File picKUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin may form his political party, but should not be allowed to use “Bersatu” as its acronym, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor argued today.

Tengku Adnan, commonly known as Ku Nan, reportedly claimed that the Malay word “Bersatu” (united) was a general term and its use may cause confusion.

“He wants to establish (a new party) which is alright. But, he cannot use the word ‘bersatu’ as it is common.

“I urged the Registrar of Society … if they want to approve, then go ahead, but if it is possible tell them not to use the word ‘Bersatu’,” the Federal Territories minister was quoted saying by The Star Online news portal.

Muhyiddin, who is slated to be the president of the new political party named Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, had on Tuesday submitted the registration application to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) for the Umno splinter party.

Tengku Adnan also said the RoS should consider the use of such words before allowing any new group to be registered, highlighting the successful registration of PAS offshoot Parti Amanah Negara as a party that he said had used a common word as part of its name.

“I also do not understand why (Amanah) was approved. Amanah is also ‘common’.

“Therefore, I hope the ROS director-general could look into this, where they are using words like this to confuse the public,” he added.

He said he believed Umno would still achieve success as it was a racially-inclusive party and a party with “focus”.

On Tuesday, Muhyiddin had said the new political party is open to Malays and Bumiputera, including those from Sarawak and Sabah.

He added that non-Bumiputera may join the party, although they will be restricted to a second-tier membership that does not permit them to vote or contest for party positions and only allows them to be appointed to such posts.

He said the party aims to uphold the position of Islam and to protect the special position of the Malays and other Bumiputera.
