Parti Pribumi will only champion Dr M’s agenda, Umno man says
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s sole mission is to serve the interests of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and to overthrow the government, an Umno MP said today.
Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim said that the new party’s leaders was just using their experience from Umno to garner Malay support but its real agenda is to serve Dr Mahathir.
“There is something not right with this new party. I am concerned that they will digress from their role in fighting for the people’s rights and will only serve to prolong Tun Dr Mahathir’s leadership legacy.
“Don’t belittle the Malays by comparing your new party to Umno because Umno stresses unity, loyalty to its leadership and serving the people,” said Irmohizam in a statement today.
The Umno Supreme Council member said that it has become a trend in the political scene in Malaysia to start a new party when things are going awry, citing Parti Amanah Negara and Parti Pribumi as examples of individuals who are no longer aligned to their party’s cause.
“Maybe this is the only way they can come up [sic] to continue getting support to further their agenda. Can you imagine, if this continues then the people will be even more divided just because of different ideologies.
“It would be a shame if the new party only splits us up and directs their energy on taking down Barisan Nasional instead of focusing on helping the people,” he said.
Irmohizam said that those in Umno were smart enough to make their own judgements and focus on the party’s mission.
“I hope we can continue to help each other instead of being jealous and stabbing each other in the back. The presidential institution ought to be defended in the face of provocation,” he said.
Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had on Tuesday submitted the application to form the new Parti Pribumi with the Registrar of Societies. It is largely believed to be an Umno splinter party.
He said that the party aims to uphold the position of Islam and to protect the special position of the Malays and other Bumiputera.
Parti Pribumi will not block non-Bumiputeras from joining as previously expected, but they would not be able to stand for party positions.
