Ever tried Starbucks’ secret menu? Find out how to order your own special drink (VIDEO)
LOS ANGELES, Aug 11 — Did you know that Starbucks has a secret menu? Do you also know that you can come up with interesting drinks that are not on the menu?
BuzzFeed has a surprise for its testers: They get to try out drinks from Starbucks’ secret menu!
The reaction varies from drink to drink, with some loving it, and others not as keen on the drinks.
These reviewers tried out peppermint lemonade (lemonade with one pump of sweetener and one pump of peppermint syrup). While some cringed at the taste, another said, “Dude, I’m gonna order this non-stop!” and another commented, “I haven’t stopped drinking it; that’s a really good sign.”
They also tried the Cap’n Crunch Frappuccino (Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino with toffee nut syrup and java chips), which one reviewer said tasted like the cereal and the Banana Split Frappucino (Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino with java chips and a banana blended in), among others.
For those of you who want to try the secret menu, keep in mind that the barista may not have an encyclopaedic knowledge of these secret drinks, so if you want to order one, here are some tips to help you out:
Do your research
Browse some secret menu options online or take inspiration from others who have customised their own drinks at Starbucks and note the recipes for drinks you want to try. Give precise instructions to the barista so they know what you want. You can try the Starbucks Secret Menu site, while the Secret Menus site has a dedicated section for Starbucks.
Determine the ‘base’ of your order
You can tell the barista you want a Butterbeer Frappuccino (for Harry Potter fans out there) or a Banana Cream Pie Frappuccino, but this may confuse the baristas, so let’s not make their jobs harder. Most of these secret drinks have a base drink that’s already on the menu, so if you want a Butterbeer Frap, for example, ask for a Vanilla Bean Cream Frappuccino and customise it.
Customise your drink
There are many types of syrups on hand at Starbucks, and the key to getting what you want is asking for additional syrup. Take the Butterbeer Frappuccino mentioned above. Ask for extra pumps of toffee nut syrup and caramel syrup, which would be 1.5 pumps each for medium drinks (grande), 2 pumps each for large drinks (venti). Make sure your order is clear: “One order of Vanilla Bean Cream Frappuccino with a pump toffee nut syrup and a pump of caramel syrup, please.”
Note that the Vanilla Bean Cream Frap is a popular base that goes with many different flavours, so it’s a good place to start.
Know that you may pay more for your drink
Customising drinks means adding extra ingredients to an existing ‘base’ drink, which may cost more, so you may want to ask how much your secret drink would cost before you dive straight in.
Remember, there are hundreds of secret drinks out there, so be patient with your baristas and keep in mind that base drinks may vary from country to country.
Here are some popular recipes to get you started:
Banana Cream Pie Frappuccino: Vanilla Bean Cream Frappuccino with an extra pump or two (depending on size of the drink) of vanilla and hazelnut syrup and a whole banana.
Biscotti Frappuccino: Order your Frappuccino of choice along with a biscotti and ask for it to be blended into the drink for an extra crunch. If they can’t (or won’t) do it, you can always crumble it in yourself.
Cotton Candy Frappuccino: Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with raspberry syrup (1 pump tall, 1.5 pumps grande, 2 pumps venti).
Banana Nut Frappuccino: Hazelnut Frappuccino — grande or venti — with an entire banana blended in.
Raspberry Cheesecake: Order a White Chocolate Mocha (hot, iced or Frappuccino) and add a few pumps of raspberry syrup.
The Nutella: Café Misto with a pump of chocolate syrup, a pump of hazelnut syrup and a drizzle of caramel.
Have fun trying them out!
