ANWAR THE NEXT PM: ‘ODD MEN OUT’ MAHATHIR & MUHYIDDIN SMILE, CLAP HANDS AS AZIZAH, KIT SIANG, MAT SABU HOLD UP PLACARDS

SHAH ALAM: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin were the odd ones out for a moment at the PKR national congress.

During the event here on Sunday, crowds of PKR delegates and the party’s top leaders – including PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail – held up placards bearing the words “Anwar the seventh Prime Minister”.

However, Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin did not join other Pakatan Harapan leaders such as DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang and Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu in holding up the placards.

Dr Mahathir was focusing on his mobile phone while Muhyiddin merely smiled and clapped his hands.

Pakatan Harapan has always maintained that Anwar was its candidate for prime minister though the dynamic may change with PPBM’s involvement in the Opposition pact.

The party – which splintered from Umno – has previously thrown its support for either Muhyiddin or Dr Mahathir as its candidate of choice.

The situation is further muddled by the fact that Anwar had been sacked as deputy prime minister by Dr Mahathir in 1998.

He was later charged with sodomy and jailed.

Anwar is currently in prison serving a five-year jail term after being convicted for a second sodomy charge.
