Spad probes SEA Games bus driver 'without license'
The Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) is investigating an allegation that a bus driver had been ferrying SEA Games competitors without a necessary driving license.
Spad chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Shah said the bus driver's company has been summoned today to assist investigations.
"We have contacted the company. We have also placed our officers by the roads and main locations of SEA Games to ensure that all buses follow Spad’s policies and safety guidelines.
"We have over 100 officers at the venues to monitor the safety of the buses," he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Several media outlets had reported that the driver who was supposed to ferry Myanmar's women football team back to their hotel on the night of Aug 17 was arrested for alleged theft, causing delays to the players.
The driver had allegedly stolen a watch belonging to a Malaysian official.
Azharuddin said all the buses have to follow the rules set out, such as having public service driver (PSD) license and a driving license.
He said in cases such as this, Spad and the police will carry out an investigation.
"Even before this (incident happened), we have had officers stationed at the SEA Games locations to ensure most of the buses follow the rules.
"We should not have drivers driving without a license," he said. -Mkini
