Shafie Apdal’s remand extended 4 days

shafie-apdal-macc-sabah-1KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court has extended the remand of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Shafie Apdal by four days in connection with a graft probe into the alleged embezzlement of RM1.5 billion in rural development funds.

However, his lawyers are seeking an early release to enable the Semporna MP to attend the annual budget debate at the Dewan Rakyat this Friday.

Shafie’s remand extension begins tomorrow and expires on Friday, leaving him with almost no leeway to attend the debate session.

“I’m surprised that the court extended Shafie’s remand by four days,” his lead counsel Martin Tommy told reporters after the proceeding at the Magistrate’s Court here.

“Shafie has given full cooperation in the corruption investigation.

“We will seek a release earlier than Friday to enable Shafie to attend the debate in Kuala Lumpur.”

Earlier today, the High Court rejected Shafie’s application to declare his remand unlawful.

However, his lawyer said Shafie would appeal the ruling within a week.

Shafie was arrested on Oct 19 over a probe into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 billion worth of funds from projects in Sabah during his tenure as rural and regional development minister, from 2009 to 2015.

The former Umno vice-president was first remanded last Friday for four days.

Shafie’s younger brothers, Hamid and Umno Lahad Datu assemblyman Yusof, as well as Hamid’s businessman son-in-law, have been released from remand on bail.

Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony and youth chief Azis Jamman were also detained and later released.

Two former secretaries of Shafie were arrested in Putrajaya and remanded as well, along with an engineer who is also Warisan’s Putatan secretary.

Shafie was the eleventh person to be arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

It was earlier reported that the MACC was scrutinising a total of 72 projects out of an original list of 350 under the ministry for suspected embezzlement of funds.

The projects were planned to be carried out between 2009 and 2015 in Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Beaufort, Keningau, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Sandakan.

The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.

Some RM170 million in bank accounts and assets of the companies involved in the projects have reportedly been frozen.

More than 45 people have been questioned since the probe began two weeks ago.

Opposition leaders claimed the investigation was politically motivated to smear the image of Warisan ahead of the 14th general election, but Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the MACC denied this, insisting that the agency operated independently.
