Malaysia to end mandatory death penalty for drug traffickers
KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 23): Malaysian Parliament tables for first reading a bill that seeks to allow courts the option of sentencing drug traffickers to life in prison.
* Under existing law, any persons convicted of drug trafficking in dangerous drugs are subjected to mandatory death penalty
* Proposed amendment to the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 states that convicted drug traffickers exempted from death penalty shall also be punished with whipping of at least 15 strokes
* Circumstances that would allow exemption from death penalty include:
