UMNO-BN MAKE FULL POLITICAL USE OF SELANGOR SULTAN TO GET AT DR M OVER BUGIS PIRATES JIBE

SHAH ALAM – Selangor’s Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen will hand over a memorandum to the Selangor Sultan tomorrow in support of the ruler who was recently upset by Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s alleged slur against the Bugis people.

Kuang assemblyman Shukor Idrus said they decided on the memorandum after Selangor assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh rejected an emergency motion to debate the issue.

“We regret the action of the speaker to reject our motion on an issue we believe is very important,” he said.

Shukor said the issue involved “our head of state” since the Selangor sultanate was founded by people of Bugis ancestry.

“Tomorrow, we will hand over our memorandum and inform Tuanku that we tried to state our support for Tuanku but our effort was dismissed out of hand by the assembly,” he added.

The motion sought the Selangor government’s agreement to bar the former prime minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman from using state-owned facilities.

Yeoh rejected the motion after ruling that priority must be given to the ongoing debate on the Selangor Budget 2018, which must be approved within four days.

Shukor did not refute suggestions that the memorandum was an attempt to seek the intervention of the Sultan to ban Mahathir from using state facilities.

“We want to state our support, and the need to punish anyone who disparages another race.”

At the PH rally against kleptocracy on Oct 14, Mahathir had called Prime Minister Najib Razak a descendant of “Bugis pirates”.

The jibe angered the state ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who called for Mahathir to be investigated for sedition.

In his response, Mahathir said his remark was not an attack on the entire Bugis people.

“I never said all Bugis were descended from pirates. All I said was that Najib could have descended from Bugis pirates,” he said.
