Dr M's lawyer: Limit comments on Najib probe to IGP, MACC chief

Police and officers with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) are reminded to maintain their integrity and independence with regard to the ongoing probe on ex-prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Lawyer Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla also suggested that directions be made by the Attorney-General's Chambers or the 1MDB investigations committee led by Abu Talib Othman that only inspector-general of police Mohd Fuzi Harun and MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull be allowed to issue statements on such investigations.
"Directives should be given to MACC and police officers involved in the investigation not to reveal any part of the investigations they are doing through the internet, social media or other mediums especially pictures and videos.
"If they do not abide by this then disciplinary action should be taken against the officers involved," he suggested.
He said these measures are to ensure the integrity of the investigations or any potential prosecution of the purported biggest scandal faced by the country, which has also grabbed worldwide attention.
"This is also to ensure the public trust in the enforcement and the judiciary following the transfer of power to the new government following the 14th general election.
"Furthermore, it is also to ensure there is no trial by the media and that the actual hearing is done in court," he advised.
Haniff made the suggestions as Najib is scheduled to be questioned again by the MACC this morning over former 1MDB-subsidiary SRC International.
SRC International was a subsidiary of 1MDB until it was placed under the Finance Ministry in 2012.
It was alleged that RM42 million of SRC money was transferred Najib’s bank account, who was also finance minister at the time.
The police had raided Najib's home in Jalan Duta and properties affiliated to him and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
It was reported on May 19 that Rosmah had complained of leaks to the on-going probe on social media. - Mkini
