KUCHING: As expected, Tan Sri Adenan Satem defeated his challenger Jazolkipli Numan of PKR for his 10th term as assemblyman in the 11th Sarawak state election today.

The Sarawak Barisan Nasional chairman and PBB president won by a majority of 5,892 votes. Adenan obtained 6,360 votes while Jazolkipli picked up only 468. He lost his deposit.

Adenan has been the incumbent for the Tanjong Datu seat since the 2006 state election, and prior to that was the assemblyman for Muara Tuang following a by-election in January 1979.

This is the first time Adenan is leading BN in a state election.

He was appointed Chief Minister in 2014, succeeding Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is now Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri. Taib was chief minister for 33 years.

In the last election in 2011, PBB made a clean sweep of the 35 seats it contested. This time PBB contested 40 seats, following a redelineation exercise which saw the number of seats increased by 11, from 71 to 82.

In the 2011 election, Adenan won by a majority of 3,216 votes. He defeated PAS candidate Nani Sahari and independent Gilbert Asson Kulong.-Bernama
