Baru lauds Ba’Kelalan voters for rejecting BN promises, money

KUCHING: Baru Bian commended voters for helping him retain the Ba’Kelalan seat by a slightly improved margin despite the “promises and money” from Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders.

“I wish to salute the people of Ba’ Kelalan for their impressive fortitude in the face of intense pressure from the BN, including many promises and huge amounts of money being poured into the area by the PM, the DPM and hoardes of BN ministers and politicians,” Baru said in a statement following his win.

The Sarawak PKR Chairman won the seat with a majority of 538 votes, defeating Willie Liau of BN, in today’s Sarawak election. In the last state polls, in 2011, Baru won the seat with a 473 majority against the same opponent.

“The people have kept their dignity and integrity by rejecting the politics of money and intimidation practiced by the BN,” Baru added.

“If we do not come together as a team, Pakatan Harapan will be punished by the voters. We have to work as a coalition rather than as individual parties to make further inroads into the constituencies.”

Baru also called this state election a test for the Oppostion coalition’s building process, admitting that only a united opposition front will be able to take on BN in the next General Election.
