Halal Speed Dating reaches new heights
KUALA LUMPUR: Shariah compliancy is the in-thing these days in Malaysia, and it has now caught up with the dating game as well.
Halal Speed Dating prides itself on meeting the requirements according to the Islamic principle of “taaruf”, in helping participants find their love matches, the Malay Mail Online reported.
So, there will be no booze, no flirting, no touching, no “gedik-gedik”, and no exchanging of contact details, as the website for the matchmaking service states.
Founded last year by a married couple, Munirah Tunai and her husband Zuhri Yuhyi, the company has organised a few events already with some success, as three marriages are already in the pipeline.
But tomorrow, the matchmaking service for Muslims will reach new heights with 144 participants attending what is now called the biggest ever halal speed dating event.
“If all the participants that have agreed to come do show up, I would say it would be the biggest halal speed dating event ever,” Munirah was quoted as saying by MMO,
She added that such a large turnout would also be double the size of the company’s previous activities.
Munirah is the Chief Operating Officer, while Zuhri heads the company as the Chief Executive Officer.
Their website also lists two more co-founders of the Halal Speed Dating venture, namely Syed Azmi AlHabshi and Hayati Ismail, both of whom remain as Consultants.
The four started the match-making service with the aim of helping participants find potential marriage partners, instead of casual hookups and the usual dating process.
Halal Speed Dating shares the same traits as regular speed dating, in that participants get a fixed time to have a chat with someone from the opposite sex.
The key difference, however, is that female candidates will be accompanied by their respective guardians. The guardians act as chaperones to observe the interaction between the female candidate and the male prospect, MMO reported.
The company founders say there is nothing new in the process, seeing that it follows “taaruf”, as it was also the same way that the previous generations in Muslim families found their match.
“It is not a new idea. Think back on how our grandparents got married. Our grandfathers were proper gentlemen. When our grandfather wanted to marry a lady, he would approach the lady’s father first,” the company states in its website.
Munirah says that their past activities tend to be overbooked by women but underbooked by men and the largest halal dating event tomorrow is no different.
Registration is free at the Halal Speed Dating website but if one is selected for participation, a ticket price of RM120 is payable.
