No crisis in Terengganu, says menteri besar

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman has struck down speculation of him being ousted and said there would not be any motion of no confidence against him at the state assembly meeting on Monday.

“There is no crisis in Terengganu, There’s no reason to raise this point because I am confident that nothing will happen,” he said to reporters at the Anak Terengganu open house in Perantau here today.

Speculation about fresh state assembly elections being called had arisen after a public spat between him and his predecessor Ahmad Said.

The Barisan Nasional has 17 in the 32-member house, giving it a one-seat majority over PAS (14) and PKR (1).

Ahmad Said, who is assemblyman for Kijang, might face disciplinary action from Umno for his criticism of Ahmad Razif and the party leadership and has threatened to cross the floor, creating a “hung” assembly.

However the menteri besar described the squabble as a “storm in a teacup”.

He said: “It can happen anywhere, don’t worry about it. The situation in Terengganu is stable and nothing uncommon will take place in the state assembly.”

The spat between him and Ahmad Said was akin to a normal argument between siblings. “There’s bound to be tension between spouses, what more about brothers. This is only a misunderstanding between siblings. I believe that this will not cause any problems but it will only strengthen our relationship.

“Maybe sometimes people can go overboard, which is why we should use this Syawal month to seek each other’s forgiveness,” he said.

Ahmad Razif, who is assemblyman for Seberang Takir gave his assurance to Umno president Najib Razak that there was nothing to be worried about.

The root of the current squabble began two years ago when Ahmad Said was forced to step down and make way for Ahmad Razif.

Ahmad’s threat on a “hung” assembly led to a suggestion by Ahmad Razif for early state elections as a solution to the leadership crisis.
