Tonga’s bare-chested flagbearer sends social media into meltdown
RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 6 — The confetti has barely settled on the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics and the Games already has its first social media star.
Meet Tonga Olympian Pita Nikolas Taufatofua who made a rather slick entry onto the world’s stage at Rio’s Maracana Stadium while serving as his nation’s flagbearer.
Naturally, the Taekwondo stud, who was accompanied by seven fellow non-shirtless teammates, shook up the usually long drawn-out flag parade, sending social media into instant meltdown, with some pondering the price of an airplane ticket to Tonga.
The 32-year-old became the star of the night clad only in his national dress called a ta’ovala, which is a Tongan mat.
According to UK’s Telegrapg, Taukatofua was born in Australia but has long been training to compete for his father’s native country.
After failing to make it in to the previous two Olympics, he finally qualified this past April — becoming the first Tonga athlete to compete in the Taekwondo category.
Take note, fans; he will compete on August 19.
He is on e of the seven athletes competing for the Polynesian kingdom, which has only won one medal in its history, a silver in 1996.
