SACKED FOR QUESTIONING 1MDB LOSSES, MUHYIDDIN MOCKS NAJIB’S FOREX PROBE: ‘WHY NOW & NOT 25 YEARS AGO WHEN YOU WERE IN DR M’S CABINET?’

MUHYIDDIN Yassin has criticised Najib Razak for forming a royal panel to probe into forex losses more than 20 years ago, saying the prime minister should have questioned the matter as he was part of the Mahathir government when it happened.

The sacked deputy prime minister said he cannot recall if Najib had brought up the matter then but noted it only became an issue when Dr Mahathir Mohamad became critical of the current government.

“Why is it formed now? If it’s true (Prime Minister) Najib Razak wants to know the truth about this, he should have voiced it out in Dr Mahathir’s cabinet 25 years ago, and if not, in the Umno Supreme Council at a time when he was vice-president,” Muhyiddin said in a statement today.

The Najib government agreed to a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to look into the Bank Negara forex losses as a task force recently found that the losses were higher than earlier estimated.
“Haven’t those who had investigated the matter long resigned? What is the primary objective of setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) now?” said Muhyiddin, who now heads the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia party.

He speculated that the RCI could have been formed to distract Malaysians from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal being investigated in five countries and also the subject of a US Department of Justice (DoJ) suit.

Muhyiddin said instead an RCI on the 1MDB scandal to investigate how far Najib, as the chairman of the Board of Advisers, had been involved in decision-making of the state fund’s assets and financial undertakings as stipulated under the point 117 of the memorandum and 1MDB Article.

“We need to know how RM2.6 billion of 1MDB funds and RM42 million of SRC International funds could end up in Najib’s private account? How were the funds being used and their recipients?

“How could Jho Low, Riza Aziz, Tarek Obaid and few 1MDB officers were able to accumulate billions of ringgit from the 1MDB transactions? What is Najib’s connection with Jho Low? And why were the contents of the auditor-general’s report on 1MDB classified?”

Muhyiddin said an RCI would also be able to look into all evidence gathered by the Special Investigation Committee led by former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.

He said if the RCI forex probe could complete its investigation and present it to the cabinet in four months, the same should have been done on the 1MDB Special Investigation Committee two years ago.

“Najib has no need to apply double standard on both cases if he is determined to find out the truth then an inquiry should also be launched on the 1MDB.”

Muhyiddin, who was sacked from his post nearly two years ago, said the 1MDB scandal was not just about Najib, but also weak administrative issues involving loss of RM50 billion public funds and the effects of breach of trust and its negative impacts on all Malaysians.
