NAJIB WILL CHEAT, HE WILL BRIBE BUT HARAPAN CAN STILL WIN GE14: MAHATHIR PREDICTS WILL GET ‘COLD FEET’ & DELAY POLLS TO NEXT YEAR
Dr Mahathir Mohamad is confident that Pakatan Harapan can win the next general election but is concerned about Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak not playing fair.
“From what we see, the support is strong but I believe Najib will use all kinds of illegal means to retain his position.
“The only problem we have is that Najib will cheat, he will bribe and do all kinds of things to maintain his leadership because he knows if he is not the prime minister, he will be charged in court and land in jail,” he told a Facebook live session.
Mahathir, who was accused of rigging the polls himself during his tenure, was responding to Thailand’s Nation Multimedia Group chairperson Suthichai Yoon who asked the former premier if he had enough support to defeat Najib.
The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson also pointed out that Umno, which he helmed for 22 years, is not as strong as before.
“You must remember, most of the members of my party wanting to overthrow Najib are ex-members of Umno,” he said.
Mahathir, who is Pakatan Harapan chairperson, remained confident of the coalition’s chances despite the possibility of numerous three-cornered fights.
“In a three-cornered fight, the opposition might be split by the Islamic party (PAS). But the Islamic party is losing popularity because it is associating itself with its old enemy Umno.
“The rank and file do not want Umno at all. The leaders may see some benefit in working with Umno but the rank and file would reject the leaders,” he said.
“There would be three-way fights but the amount of votes the third party can get would be so little that there is a good chance for us to win against Najib,” he added.
‘Sabah is no longer a fixed deposit’
On whether the election would be called at the end of the year, Mahathir claimed that Najib is suffering from “cold feet”.
“Maybe 10 months ago, he felt confident. Now, he sees Sabah is no longer a fixed deposit for the government party,” he said.
During the interview, Mahathir also explained that Bersatu was formed with the aim of garnering Malay votes in rural areas.
“In the last election, we noticed that rural Malays did not support the anti-Najib coalition.
“We formed this party to get the support of the rural Malays. (Together) with the support of the urban people, we can get the majority,” he said.
Since its inception, Mahathir said Bersatu has been going to the grassroots level to explain the situation in the country.
“More than 1MDB, they are feeling hardship due to the increased cost of living. Not getting scholarships for their children, graduates not being employed. This, they understand,” he added.
