Abu Zahar reprimands opposition MPs
KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara president today reprimanded four opposition MPs for “disturbing” the Senate proceedings.
This happened when the opposition MPs were holding a press conference on the government’s strategic investment company 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) at the Parliament lobby.
Five minutes into the press conference, Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Ujang walked into the lobby and told the MPs that they were “disturbing” the proceedings.
“If you want to have a press conference, please go out,” he said before entering the House again.
The four MPs – Tony Pua ( Petaling Jaya Utara) , William Leong (Selayang), Kamarul Baharin Abbas (Telok Kemang) and Dr Tan Seng Giaw (Kepong) – obliged and proceeded to exit the Parliament lobby. They then spoke to the press outside.
In the Dewan Negara, Abu Zahar said Opposition and Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs were not supposed to disturb the Senate proceedings.
“The Dewan Rakyat MPs are not supposed to disturb Dewan Negara proceedings. And the Dewan Negara Senators are not supposed to disturb Dewan Rakyat proceedings.
“Respect the Dewan,” he added, expressing hope that the Parliament security staff would carry out their duties.
Pua, after the press conference, said he had no problem with the Speaker’s directive.
However, he added: “We, as MPs, have the right to use the facilities provided to us. What we can’t do is enter the House while it is in session.”
