UMT ready to repatriate Italian students body

UMT-drowningKUALA NERUS: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is ready to repatriate the body of Italian student Lorenzo Borella, believed to have drowned in Pulau Redang on Sunday.

UMT vice-chancellor Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar said the university was still awaiting the arrival of Borella’s family members tonight, before the process can be finalised.

Borella’s body was found at about 4.30pm, floating 250 metres from the beach, near Chagar Hutang.

The 27-year-old, who came to Malaysia under a student exchange programme at UMT, was believed to have been snorkeling and taking pictures of marine life in the area before going missing.

His body was sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for post-mortem.

Commenting on the incident, Dr Nor Aieni said the student had adhered to all standard operating procedures (SOP) set to perform such activities.

“Unfortunately, the risks are still there, and he was involved in the accident. This is the first incident involving an international student in UMT. We hope that the security level is prioritised and enhanced after this,” she said.

Borella arrived in UMT on Feb 21, with 22 other international students, to pursue the Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems.

The victim had chosen Ecosystem and Turtle Conservation as his field of choice.
