Zakir Naik a voice of moderation says deputy minister

wadji-dusikiPETALING JAYA: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has dubbed controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik a “voice of moderation” in the midst of rising extremist voices on Islam.

Asyraf reportedly told business radio station BFM this morning that the preacher’s moderate stance on Islam was precisely why Putrajaya granted Zakir permission to go ahead with his lectures, despite protests from many quarters.

“Islam is right now a misunderstood religion, and there are many voices that are perceived as being extremist. We need a voice of moderation,” Malay Mail Online quoted Asyraf as saying on the radio programme.

“He represents a voice of moderation, not only among Muslims, but especially non-Muslims,” the deputy minister in charge of Islamic affairs said. He was also among those who lobbied for Zakir to be allowed to speak in the country.

Zakir recently concluded a series of lectures in several states nationwide, despite objections from various non-Muslim groups.

On another matter, Asyraf said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) was satisfied with the fiscal management of Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).

According to him, the letter from BNM to LTH last year warning the Muslim pilgrims’ fund about its lack of reserves, was not the only correspondence between the two bodies.

“After that, Tabung Haji replied to the Bank Negara letter, and Bank Negara also wrote in to say it was satisfied with the explanation.

“The problem was that only the first letter went viral, while the second and third letters never went viral.”

According to him, it was “normal procedure” for BNM to write reminder letters to LTH and other financial institutions, seeking clarification on how they managed their asset liquidity and reserves.

He said although LTH did not come under BNM’s supervision, it was still answerable to the central bank.

BNM’s warning that LTH did not have enough reserves to pay back its depositors prompted some to withdraw their savings from the fund.
