Movement targets 1mil signatures for Citizens Declaration

Selamatkan Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The movement behind the Citizens’ Declaration calling for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation, aims to submit one million signatures to the Conference of Rulers next month.

Secretary of the Save Malaysia campaign, Kamaruddin Jaafar of PKR said at a press conference on Tuesday, “We are sure the Rulers’ Council will listen to the people’s call for the prime minister to step down and for those associated with him to be removed.”

Kamaruddin, who is also the MP for Tumpat, said the Save Malaysia movement was not bound by a deadline and added, “We will only stop when our target is achieved.”

He added that given the 250,000 signatures the movement already had in hand, they hoped to achieve one million before May 9 in time for the Rulers’ Council meeting from May 11-12.

“There will be a series of Save Malaysia roadshows in nine states across the country. Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is going to each and every one of those roadshows,” he said, when speaking about the steps to be taken to achieve their one million target.

When asked how they planned to submit the signatures to the Rulers, Kamaruddin said that while the actual details had not been ironed out, they would ensure it was conducted in a respectful manner.

“We will do it in a respectable way, in honouring their (Rulers) sovereignty,” he said.

Meanwhile MP for Kuala Terengganu, Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) explained that the movement had decided to seek the help of the Rulers after they too had expressed their hope that the controversy surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad would be resolved as soon as possible.

“The statement from the Rulers shows their concern with the 1MDB issue. They started the ball rolling in October, November with their statement,” he said.
