Mahathir moves to freeze Najibs assets
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and two others are asking the court to freeze assets belonging to Prime Minister Najib Razak.
An application was filed on Tuesday at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, according to Mahathir’s lawyer, Haniff Khatri Abdulla.
The injunction seeks to freeze the assets and bank accounts registered in Najib’s name and to compel the prime minister to pay the government RM2.6 billion in exemplary damages and RM42 million in aggravated damages.
Mahathir also asked for a court order that Najib declare and furnish details of all his assets within 10 days of the order.
The disclosure of Najib’s assets should be made in a sworn statement and include assets that may be held by his nominees, the application said.
Mahathir, along with Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Anina Saadudin, who filed a lawsuit against Najib for allegations of abuse of powers last month, said in the application that, based on past records, there was a possibility that Najib or his associates, would transfer the money out of the country.
“The Attorney-General said that Najib had received a sum of money and that the money had been returned to Saudi Arabia,” they said.
“If the money is not within the country’s perimeters, then the reliefs we are seeking will be futile.”
Last month, the trio sued Najib over claims of abuse of power in office.
