Annuar: Just accept what you’re told, don’t question RM2.6b

PETALING JAYA: All Umno members should accept the explanation given by party president Najib Razak about the RM2.6 billion donation from the Saudi royal family and refrain from asking more questions about it.

Umno information chief Annuar Musa was quoted saying in Sinar Harian that party members cannot question whether it was right or not for Najib to receive the funds in his personal bank accounts, as there were no laws in the country prohibiting political parties from receiving such funds or donations.

“Umno leaders should only tell party members what they need to know (about the donation), because it involves political funding.

“If we continue to question the practice of receiving political funding, an idea which even the Opposition has not taken a stance on, it is a silly thing to do,” Annuar was quoted as saying.

According to him, the RM2.6 billion issue had become a “weapon” for former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Opposition to attack Najib, even when the premier had repeatedly said the funds were a donation from a foreign country, and not the people’s money.

On a separate issue, Annuar said he did not discount the possibility of Barisan Nasional working with new parties to “strengthen” the coalition before the next general election.

“We cannot deny that the existing coalition may see changes before the 2018 polls, as two years is a long time in politics,” said the Ketereh MP.

Annuar also claimed that the country’s economy was the strongest under Najib’s leadership, saying that the level of Bumiputera equity which stood at 18.7 per cent throughout Mahathir’s 22-year premiership, now stood at 24 per cent under Najib’s leadership.

“Even when he (Mahathir) cried on stage when he said he was stepping down, he blamed the Malays, whereas he was at fault for not helping the race despite leading Umno for 22 years.”
