Liow wants Kamalanathan to retract remarks on UEC
PETALING JAYA: Liow Tiong Lai wants Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan to retract his remarks about the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
The MCA president said Kamalanathan’s statement in Parliament that the government’s refusal to recognise the UEC was due to issues of “national sovereignty” was never discussed in Cabinet meetings.
“This has nothing to do with the sovereignty of the country.
“This is his personal view and not the government’s. He may not have had the necessary information when he commented on the matter and this might mislead the public,” he was quoted by The Star as saying.
Liow was of the opinion that if the MIC lawmaker did not fully comprehend the issue, he should have let Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon explain it instead.
He added: “the statement (Kamalanathan made) might hurt the Chinese education system and the nation.”
In Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party president Teo Chee Kang said Kamalanathan’s remarks linking the recognition of the UEC to national sovereignty, left him puzzled.
“I wonder whether he knew what he was talking about. I cannot understand how it is related to national sovereignty,” The Star quoted him as saying.
