Zahid: Dr M quitting Proton is ‘best possible move’
PETALING JAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has described Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as chairman of Proton Holdings Bhd, among others, as the “best possible move”, the New Straits Times reported.
“It is difficult for the government to have someone who isn’t on board with the government’s policies and yet, still hold numerous positions in organisations and GLCs, even in an advisory capacity,” the English daily quoted Zahid as saying.
The country’s number two, who is currently in Washington DC, explained that while Proton isn’t a GLC, it is still tied to the National Automotive Policy and, therefore, Proton would need technical and financial support from the government.
When asked about the former prime minister’s role in the Perdana Leadership Foundation, Zahid said no one had yet to urge Mahathir to step down as its honorary president.
Apart from resigning as Proton Holdings chairman, Mahathir also relinquished his post as the Universiti Teknologi Petronas Chancellor as well as the adviser to the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) and the Tioman Island Development Authority (Tida).
Mahathir’s resignation from the national car company comes barely a month after the Cabinet terminated his appointment as Petronas adviser.
