Kotabaru to install fish apartment
KOTABARU, South Kalimantan: The Kotabaru Marine and Fisheries Agency plans to install fish apartments to stimulate the growth of various types of fish in the waters, AntaranewsKalsel reported.
“It used to be the rumpon (an artificial fish breeding ground made from bamboo and coconut leaf) made by fishermen to collect fish to be caught, but the apartment of fish let all kinds of small fish can go up to grow up to be freshly caught,” said Head of the Fishing Department of Marine and Fisheries Agency Dedy Rusnadi in Kotabaru, Wednesday.
The apartment that serves as the coral reefs planned to be installed in the waters of Sarangtiung, North Pulaulaut, Kotabaru, has about 35 modules with a value of hundreds of millions as assistance from South Kalimantan provincial government.
The apartments of fish made of concrete construction, which weighs up to tons, so it is not easily destroyed by currents or the other.
Dedy explained, in about three months the apartments will be inhabited by a lot of fish with various species.
“Although it has been a lot of fish around the apartment, the fishing is still prohibited in a certain time, because the purpose of installation of the apartment is to protect the small fish so as not to be caught,” he said.
He acknowldged, Kotabaru fishermen lately in difficulty to get the catch of fish, because the fish in the waters which used to be found now scarce.
