Netizens shocked over high electricity bills

PETALING JAYA: Netizens are venting their anger on social media over the sudden and sharp hike in their electricity bills.

Most of them complained about their latest bills noting numbers double or triple their usual bills.

Facebook user Daryl Lim said his bills were normally around RM100 but had swelled to RM400 last month.

“It can’t cost that much for a unit with three occupants. Please explain the raise,” he posted on national power provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) Careline Facebok page.

Another user, Aiza Fariza, also took to the page to vent her anger about having to fork out RM250 for a house with two occupants.

“I’ve already contacted TNB and a technician was supposed to check our meters, but there is still no action until today. We don’t want TNB to use the El-Nino phenomenon as an excuse,” she said.

Facebook user Vincent Gan also urged TNB to recheck all electricity bills as the sudden hike was “unacceptable”.

“Our bill is usually around RM40 a month, but it went up to RM160 last month. This is ridiculous!”

However, user Farezshafiq Yeen said the exorbitant bills could be attributed to the prolonged El Nino phenomenon, as electrical appliances, such as refrigerators and air conditioners had to work harder during hot weather.

He explained that for instance, the compressor of an air conditioner set at 22 degrees Celcius during normal weather would have to work with the difference in temperature, which is about four to six degrees Celsius.

“With the current weather, that can go up to 40 degrees Celsius, compressors need to work the difference between the desired temperature and present weather.

“If air conditioners were set at 22 degrees Celcius during such weather, it would have to operate at a difference of 18 degrees,” he said.

Earlier today, TNB stated that the country’s electricity consumption reached an all-time high of 17,175 MW in demand last month, breaking the June 2014 record of 16,901 MW.
