9 JMM members arrested over protest at court

R Munusamy

PETALING JAYA: Police arrested seven men and two women who took part in a protest at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex in Jalan Duta today.

Sentul Police Chief R Munusamy said the protesters, who are Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) members, will be investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for failing to give prior notice of the event.

Under Section 9(1), an assembly organiser must notify the officer of the district police station, 10 days prior to the event. Failing to do so is an offence under Section 9(5) and the person may be fined up to RM10,000.

Earlier, The Star Online reported Munusamy as saying that the protesters were being detained at the Sentul police station.

The report also stated that a commotion broke out after the group refused to leave despite the police requesting them to leave the court’s compound.

JMM members arrived at the court as early as 8.30am today.

They came to challenge former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to a debate over the alleged affair between him and a businesswoman.

The group came to the court today as the divorce proceeding between lawyer Stanley Augustin and his wife, Gee Siew Yee, was slated for case management today.

The divorce came under the spotlight when a purported statutory declaration by Augustin stated that his wife was having an affair with a senior politician.
