Miscommunication over ‘bomb’ grounds Malindo Air flight in Malacca for two hours
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 ― A middle-aged couple boarding a Malindo Air flight at the Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam caused a two-hour flight delay today by uttering the word “bomb” during check-in.
Central Malacca police chief assistant commissioner Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah said airlines staff at the check-in counter claimed to have overheard the husband-and-wife duo utter the taboo word at about 10.45am, a Malay daily reported.
“Following the incident, the flight which was scheduled to depart for Pekanbaru, Indonesia at 12.15pm had to be grounded for inspection for about two hours,” he was quoted saying by Utusan Malaysia’s online portal.
The inspection was carried by a forensics team; a bomb disposal unit was also called in to check the passenger’s bags to ensure there were no dangerous or suspicious objects on board.
“Our interview with the witness later showed that there was a misunderstanding and the incident did not reveal any bomb threats. It was a result of a miscommunication between the passenger and the staff at the airport,” the policeman was quoted saying.
The Malindo Air flight was cleared for departure at 2.10pm, with all 38 passengers on board. The couple, however, could only leave on a different flight later in the day.
Last Friday, an army corporal was arrested by police for jokingly uttering the word ‘bomb’ at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
Airport staff was asking the 32-year-old man about the contents of one of his luggage at the check-in counter when he said it was a “bomb”.
