Peng Soon will win us Rio gold, former teacher says

Peng Soon-Liu Ying will be facing Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia in the final to be played tomorrow. — Reuters picGEORGE TOWN, Aug 16 ― There is a ray of hope for Malaysia to win a first ever Olympic gold medal through badminton when mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying see action in the final at the Rio Olympics tomorrow.

Peng Soon, 28, a Penangite, studied at SJK (C) Sum Sum (primary education) and SMK Zainal Abidin (secondary education) before becoming a professional badminton player.

His class teacher Lee Wei Eng was the first person to believe in Chan’s ability to excel in badminton when he was in Standard 4 at SJK(C) Sum Sum, some 18 years ago.

“I knew he had the potential to excel in badminton as well as other sports, hence I chose him to represent the school and from there he advanced to represent the state and won a silver for men’s doubles in Sukma when he was just 12,” she said when met today.

Lee said that some three years ago, Peng Soon came back to the school with his wife and child to meet them.

“I am touched that he had never forgotten us and I wish him all the best in Rio tomorrow. I will definitely be watching at home. I am positive that if he gives his best, he can win the match,” she said.

Lee also said that the people of Sum Sum would pray for his success and fully support him in the upcoming tournament and the clip of him winning will be played in the school the next day as the match is late at night.

Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost Hansen is confident that Malaysia will win two gold medals in the Rio Olympics, through Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying.
