Most popular Malaysian film award may be decided online in future
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Malaysians might get to vote for the most popular local film in future editions of the Malaysia Film Festival (FFM), National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) director-general Datuk Kamil Othman disclosed today.
Kamil said online voting by the general populace was one of the options raised in a meeting earlier this morning between Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak and representatives from the local film industry.
“It is one of the many many possibilities,” he told reporters here.
Kamil said the possibility of online voting from the public would match the current scenario where many communicate and offer their views through social media.
“We did not touch on this in detail, but maybe the voting system in the future can be done online. Because at the end of the day, Finas’s stand is that since the viewers have paid money to watch the film, maybe 20 per cent of the voting can be from online,” he said.
He said that any online voting would only be used to determine which film was most popular as viewers’ opinion tend to be subjective.
