Sabah travel agent charged with supporting IS

Mohd Firdaus Asren Saputra Asren was charged with two counts of soliciting support for IS and three charges of dealing with terrorist property by allowing money to be deposited in a bank account for IS activities. — AFP picKOTA KINABALU, Aug 16 — A local travel agency operator, Mohd Firdaus Asren Saputra Asren, was today charged in the Magistrate’s Court with supporting and soliciting support for world terror group Islamic State (IS).

The 34-year-old man was charged with two counts of soliciting support via social media messaging app Telegram and three charges of dealing with terrorist property by allowing money to be deposited in a bank account for IS activities.

No plea was recorded from Mohd Firdaus, who was unrepresented.

In the first charge, Mohd Firdaus was alleged to be looking for support for the IS via Telegram between March 25 and June 29 at a house in Kg. Contoh Petagas, Putatan.

For the second charge, he was accused of soliciting or giving support for the commission of terrorist acts involving the use of explosives and the act was done with the intention to continue an ideological which reasonably be regarded as an intention to threaten people in Malaysia.

Both charges under Section 130 J (1)(a) and Section 130J (1)(b) of the Penal Code can be punished with a lifetime imprisonment or a jail term of up to 30 years, or a fine, and forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in connection with the commission of the offence.

For the third, fourth and fifth charge, he was accused of knowingly dealing with terrorist property by allowing money to be banked in into a Maybank account belonging to one “Bukhori Chee Noor” for the benefit of the IS terrorist group.

Mohd Firdaus was accused of performing the transactions on three separate occasions at various Maybank branches between April 1 and June 30.

If convicted of the third to fifth charges under Section 130Q (1) of the Penal Code, he can be punished with a jail term of up to 20 years, or a fine, and forfeiture of any property dealt with.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali asked Magistrate Cindy McJuce Balitus to deny bail for Mohd Firdaus as specified by the offences under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

Wan Farrah also said that she would be applying for the case to be transferred to the High Court.

The case has been set for mention next on September 19.
